OVERVIEW:

The HDE asphalt maintenance vehicle is a turnkey infrared asphalt repair machine that will heat up and soften a localized area of the surface course asphalt, allowing for the area to be re-worked and compacted fixing any surface deterioration. HDE’s highly efficient infrared heaters can soften the surface course ( up to 2.5″) of asphalt to the original mixing temperatures in 5 to 10 minutes without burning the asphalt. The asphalt can then be scarified and the re-rolled to form a seamless watertight repair.

Potholes, surface cracks, bad joints, bird baths, catch basins, and manholes can be economically repaired with minimal time expended and minor traffic re-routing throughout the year. The HDE asphalt heaters have also proven well for pre-heating of the asphalt for cold weather paving.

HDE infrared trucks provide unique features that you will not find in any other infrared heater on the market.

The HDE Asphalt Reclaimer is capable of both maintaining the temperature of virgin asphalt and reheating cold material to workable temperature. The HDE Asphalt Reclaimer can be used 365 days a year whether it is using material from the local asphalt plant or recycling left- over material to create a hot patching material in the middle of the winter. Reheating left over materials eliminates the need of disposal and can drastically reduce the amount of cold patch material needed to repair problem areas. The reheating process can take 8-12 hours depending on the ambient temperatures and the amount of asphalt that is being heated. By using a digital temperature controller we are able to heat the asphalt safely until it has reached the desired temperature. The controller prevents any burning of the asphalt by turning the heaters of at a pre-set temperature (i.e. 300 ° F).

OPERATION

The HDE system allows the operator to heat for a period of 10 minutes. The first five minutes runs on high mode (35 PSI ) and allows the infrared rays to penetrate through the surface of the asphalt. The next five minutes can be run on low mode (15 -20 PSI), allowing deeper penetration by conduction while maintaining an even heat on the surface without burning the oils in the asphalt. (Competitors units operate on one pressure, preventing the operator to turn the heat down ) This allows the operator to reduce fuel usage throughout the day.

Conventional recyclers with high intensity burners will expose the bitumen and aggregate to very high temperatures in proximity to the heat source, even if the heat is indirect. If the temperature of the bitumen goes beyond 275°F (175°C) the light oils start to burn off and the bitumen becomes more brittle. This is especially critical with aged bitumen in RAP that has already oxidized over the years.

NO BLOWERS

The HDE heaters run on the natural vapor pressure from the vaporizer, getting the correct air/gas ratio without using blowers and batteries, so the operation is simpler and more economical than other designs. The HDE design uses a Venturi design to uses air from the atmosphere to mix with the propane gas. This creates the ideal mixture of propane and air to burn at the correct temperature to create an Infrared Heat Wave. This is confirmed with the picture below showing the IR heater with a output of 1046 °C. This create a IR heat wave that will penetrate into the entire surface course of the asphalt.

MAINTENANCE AND PARTS

All of HDE’s equipment is built with standard gas components, available at gas suppliers throughout North America, if we are unable to meet your delivery requirements. HDE stocks replacement parts and do recommend consulting us prior to making other purchases. Most customers can receive parts within 2 days for US orders and next day for Canadian orders.

FEATURES

HDE's replaceable ceramic cartridge allows for easy replacement of the heating element. Typical cartridge life is about 1,500 hours, and can be changed in less than 20 minutes. This patented design prevents the heat from transferring to the heater plenum (top), thus extending the life of the heater.

HDE's heaters are capable of running at pressures of 5 PSI up to 40 PSI. HDE's unique High/Low system allows the operator to heat the patch with a higher temperature for the first 5 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of low heat. This enables the operator to reduce the fuel usage while the heat is penetrating deeper into the already heated patch.

Full hydraulics. The C.G.A. approved vaporizer converts liquid propane to vapor gas. Unlike conventional vapor heating systems, our liquid system will not freeze, and can operate on one ropane tank at a time, at temperatures of -15°F (-25°C). Operating on liquid propane allows the truck to carry fewer tanks, and can empty a tank completely. A typical 8' x 6.6' heater will operate on two to three 100 pound propane tanks per day.

The heater deck raises and lowers hydraulically by two 4" cylinders that are controlled from either side of the truck. A built in safety (Velocity Fuse) allows for the heater deck to lower slowly in case of a hose rupture.

The HDE roller lift (patent pending) is designed to lift any type of single drum asphalt roller or plate tamper effortlessly from the ground and place it on the deck of the truck. The unit is hydraulically powered, and is controlled by a single push-button located beside the lift. A 25 gallon water tank allows enough water for a days operation, and can be filled from either side of the truck.

The HDE hotbox reclaimer will maintain proper working temperature of the asphalt for up to 48 hours. The hopper is heated by two 25,000 BTU infrared heaters. A digital PLC temperature controller monitors the hopper and powers the ignition system as required to keep the material pliable. The automatic spark ignition has a built in safety that will automatically shut off the gas if the flame does out. The temperature is monitored by the on-board PLC that will monitor the temperature throughout the day and night. A built in timer can turn the reclaimer on at a preset time.

A standard 8.2 x 6.6 heating deck has 10 heaters that can be shut off individually. With all 10 heaters running the machine would cost about $10 - $16/hour. That equals about an average of 2.5 100 lb. tanks per day. By controlling the number of heaters that are used and the pressure of the heaters the amount of fuel used can be increased or reduced.

All HDE patcher vehicles are fueled by liquid draw propane cylinders. There are standard propane cylinders that will draw liquid off of the top, converting it into vapour gas through the vaporizer. Using liquid tanks eliminates the need to carry extra propane tanks. Photographed above are two 200 pound LPG tanks. These will provide up to two days of operating, depending on the pressure that the heaters are operating at.
